Miyawaki Forest Technique How ATS Destinaire Is Changing the Face of Sustainable Living in Noida By: abhishek maheshwari, August 24, 2023

At ATS Infrastructure, we strongly believe in & support sustainable development. We understand the various environmental challenges posed by aggressive real estate development, especially across suburban areas. And so, we are doing our best to enable, empower, & promote sustainable development, that helps balance the need for modern, luxurious living with the growing demand for green living.

We have multiple ongoing projects with green development & wellness living at the forefront. And ATS Destinaire is the crown jewel amongst them all. Using the Miyawaki technique, this premium project is being constructed with 4.75 acres of dense man-made forest surrounding it, with over 50,000 naturally grown trees as your neighbor. It stands to allow for a minimum of 300% more species in the same area as compared to conventional plantations.

This will facilitate 30x the carbon dioxide absorption, leading to our residents breathing in pure, unpolluted air like never before. What’s more is that the Miyawaki Forest Technique will provide a 3000% decrease in noise & dust isolation.

But before we get deeper into the benefits of a man-made dense ecosystem smack in the middle of the chaotic city life, let’s understand

What is the ‘Miyawaki Forest Technique?’

The Miyawaki method involves planting native species of plants close together to create a mini forest that grows 10 times faster and 30 times denser than a regular forest.  It is a long-term commitment with mainly the following steps –

  1. Choosing native species of plants that grow well together. ATS Destinaire is planting trees like Neem, Pipal, Banyan, Gulmohar, etc.
  2. Intensive soil preparation by digging pits and adding compost, manure and fertilizers to enrich the soil.
  3. Planting the saplings close together at a density of about 2,500 to 3,000 plants per acre. The saplings are planted in a triangular pattern.
  4. Providing intensive care in the initial 2-3 years through regular watering and weeding.
  5. Within 3-5 years, the Miyawaki forest becomes dense and self-sustaining, requiring little maintenance.

Benefits of the Miyawaki Forest Technique

The benefits of Miyawaki forests are manifold. They help improve the air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. They also reduce noise pollution, control soil erosion, recharge groundwater and provide a habitat for birds and insects.

  • Faster growth

Miyawaki forests grow 10-30 times faster than natural forests. This is because the saplings are planted very close together, which forces them to grow taller and thicker to compete for sunlight.

  • Denser vegetation

The high density planting results in forests that are 30-40 times denser than natural forests. This means more trees, plants and biodiversity in a small area.

  • Improved environment

The dense vegetation helps improve the environment in many ways. The forests absorb more carbon dioxide, produce more oxygen, control soil erosion, reduce noise and air pollution, etc.

  • Higher biodiversity

The native plant species used in Miyawaki forests attract a wider variety of birds, insects and other animals, resulting in higher biodiversity.

  • Lower maintenance

After the initial 2-3 years of intensive care, Miyawaki forests become self-sustaining and require little maintenance. The dense vegetation helps maintain micro-climatic conditions.

  • Aesthetic value

The dense and lush green Miyawaki forests have high aesthetic value. They provide a refreshing environment and improve the ambiance.

  • Low cost

Miyawaki forests can be created at a relatively lower cost due to the small area required and less long-term maintenance.

  • Urban solution

The technique is well-suited for urban areas where land is scarce. It helps create forests within limited spaces to improve the environment of cities.

In summary, the Miyawaki Forest Technique offers an effective solution to create dense urban forests that grow fast, require less maintenance but provide maximum environmental benefits. They can truly transform our cities into ‘green cities’ and improve the quality of life for residents.

Thus, by creating these urban forests within ATS Destinaire, ATS Infrastructure is setting an example for sustainable residential developments. The dense forests will provide a lush green environment for the residents and improve their quality of life.

The Miyawaki technique demonstrates that even in limited urban spaces, dense forests can be created that rival the biodiversity of natural forests. With more projects adopting this technique, our cities can truly become ‘green cities’ in the true sense.

Why choose sustainable development?

Even though the importance of sustainable living goes without saying, homebuyers & people looking to invest in residential real estate need to understand the many benefits of choosing a property like ATS Destinaire –

Sustainable housing is set to transform the real estate sector in Noida and the wider National Capital Region (NCR). The key ways in which it will change the future are

  • Rising consumer demand

There is growing awareness and demand among home buyers for sustainable and eco-friendly housing options. This can be attributed to a host of factors –

  • Environmental consciousness

More consumers are becoming aware of environmental issues and the impact of their lifestyle choices. This is driving the demand for sustainable housing options.

  • Health benefits

Consumers realize that sustainable homes with green features offer health benefits like better air quality, access to nature, and reduced use of toxic materials.

  • Cost savings

Sustainable homes tend to be more energy and water efficient, resulting in lower utility bills and operating costs for homeowners. This is an attractive proposition.

  • Prestige and value

Living in an eco-friendly home has become a matter of prestige and perceived higher social value for many consumers.

  • Government policies

The Indian government is continuously supporting the cause of sustainable development & forming norms and policies aimed at the same. This, in turn, is bound to push the entire sector towards more eco-friendly practices.

Here are a few examples of how the government is encouraging green development –

  • Stricter norms

The government is introducing stricter environmental norms for new constructions related to energy efficiency, waste management, use of toxic materials, etc.

  • Incentives

There are also incentives and tax benefits offered to sustainable developments to encourage the shift.

For example, lower GST rates for green buildings.

  • Mandates

Certain sustainable practices may become mandatory in the future through new laws and building codes.

This is bound to push the entire sector to adapt.

  • Resource efficiency

Sustainable housing focuses on reducing resource consumption through efficient designs, materials, and technologies. This leads to lower operating costs for homeowners and higher returns for developers, along with the following additional benefits –

  • Lower energy and water consumption

Sustainable designs, materials, and technologies enable homes to consume less energy and water through efficient lighting, insulation, appliances, fixtures, etc.

  • Lower operating costs

This translates to lower utility bills and operating costs for homeowners. It also improves the cash flows for developers.

  • Higher material efficiency

Sustainable practices like reuse, recycling, and reduced waste also improve material efficiency during construction.

  • Healthier living

Sustainable features like natural ventilation, use of non-toxic materials, green spaces etc. make these homes healthier and more conducive for living. This adds significant value for home buyers in ways more than one –

  • Better air quality

Features like natural ventilation, green spaces, and non-toxic materials improve the indoor air quality, making homes healthier to live in.

  • Access to nature

Exposure to nature and greenery through gardens, trees, and landscaping has significant health benefits for residents.

  • Reduced use of toxic materials

The avoidance of toxic and harmful materials in furnishings, paints, etc. ensures a non-hazardous living environment.
